In January 2014, Senior team coach Stephen Keshi invited him to be a part of the Nigeria national football team squad for the 2014 African Nations Championship. He helped the team to a third-place finish after Nigeria beat Zimbabwe by a goal to nil.

On 6 June 2015, Shehu joined the newly promoted Primeira Liga side of C.F. União on a two-year deal.
On 2 September 2016, Shehu joined Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta on a two-year deal worth 20% of the player re-sale fee in another European club.
He was selected by Nigeria for their 35-man provisional squad for the 2016 Summer Olympics.
On 24 January 2018, Shehu signed for two and a half years Turkish side Bursaspor.
In May 2018 he was named in Nigeria's preliminary 30-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia
On 19 September 2020, Shehu signed for the Cyprus First Division side Omonia.
